Paulo C. Chagas, Director
Paulo C. Chagas is Professor of Composition at the University of California , Riverside . He is a Brazilian composer of international reputation. His music develops a pluralistic aesthetic, embracing elements from both European and Brazilian traditions.
Chagas has composed over 100 pieces including works for opera, ballet, multimedia, pieces for orchestra, chamber music, electronic and computer music. His works have been played by international orchestras such as the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, the Opera Bonn, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra. Chagas' work has been commissioned for several prestigious international festivals, such as Ars Musica, MusikTriennale, Moscow Autumn, Musica Nova among others. He has been a member of various competition juries and selection committees.
Chagas is also a theoretician and researcher in music theory and technology. His articles and essays are written in many languages and published in international journals. They focus on issues of musical semiotics, music philosophy and phenomenology. As part of his effort to develop a new Composition Program at UC Riverside, Paulo C. Chagas founded and created the Experimental Acoustic Research Studio (EARS), which provides a facility for research, production, and performance of electroacoustic music and multimedia projects.
Previously, Chagas was the Sound Director of the Studio for Electronic Music of the WDR (West German Radio and Television Broadcasting) and belonged to the Board of Directors of the CRFMW (Musical Research Center of Wallonie, Liège).
Jason Heath, Associate Director
Jason Francesco Heath is a Los Angeles based composer and a Ph.D. candidate in Composition at the University of California , Riverside .
He has studied at UCLA and at the conservatory of the University of Valparaíso in Chile . Jason has studied composition with flute virtuoso and composer James Newton, composer, Paulo Chagas and classical guitar with composer/guitarist Matthew Elgart of the Elgart/Yates duo.
His music has been performed by Mládi chamber orchestra, the Denali string quartet, and has been heard at such diverse venues as KXLU 88.9 and the Grand Performances series at Los Angeles' California Plaza. Jason composes music for films and documentaries as well as art music for mixed media and chamber ensembles of various instrumentations.
As associate director of the Experimental Acoustic Research Studio (EARS) he is dedicated to the advancement of new multi-disciplinary approaches to digital music and new media composition, promoting new performance modalities and exploring ever-evolving digital technologies.
James Lin, Technical Director
James Lin is the Chief Technology Officer of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at UC Riverside.
Before joining UC Riverside, he was a division president of an international trading company responsible for B2B e-commerce. Before that, he was the special project director for a medical device manufacturer and was one of the inventors of a US patented medical device.James' second US patent developed at UC Riverside is currently in pending.
